Its true that in most bands there isn't enough hairspray and ego to go around that can compete with the guitar player, but I'm curious, what bands are built around, or feature the bass player? Here are a few I can think of, and part of the reason I switched over to bass:

Rush -- Geddy lee... too obvious
RHCP -- Flea... again, too obvious
    Jamiroquai -- Stuart Zender... whoa
No Doubt -- Tony Kanal... some great stage presence and basslines..
KISS -- Gene Simons... not a musical genius, but he steals the show...
EW&F -- Verdine White... With +15 people on stage, anyone can get lost, but I always see Verdine...

Who else gives the guitar player a run for their money...?

How many people know the Motorhead guitarists name? ;) Type O Negative?

I guess any band where the frontman plays bass isn't really a fair answer to this question.

Steve Harris of Iron Maiden is probably one of the better known non-frontman bassists, at least among non bass players.

It's a regret to say this, but pin-up boy Pete Wentz of Fall Out boy. He stands out for me. Not for his skill with an axe, just his asthetically pleasing hairstyle.
On a better note, Mike D'antonio of Killwitch Engage is amongst one of the most vibrantly enegetic bassists around today.
No others currently come to mind atm.

    Tony Levin in King Crimson.

This is the wrong forum for this thread though. It should be in bassists.

Are we talking purely rock bands? Because in any given jazz ensemble the "band leader" is the bassist. Dave Holland Quartet. Guess who's the bassist/bandleader? Yep, Dave Holland.

And what about Weather Report? Everyone knows Jaco, right?

Other hard rock acts where the bass is very prominent would be Tool (Justin Chancellor), Rage Against the Machine (Timmy C), and obviously Mudvayne (Ryan Martinie.) Back in the '90s, Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Cop Shoot Cop both had two bassists in their lineups.

Ooh others: Morphine (Mark Sandman), Death From Above 1979 (bass & drums duo), Korn (love or hate Fieldy, his tone is distinctive and his sonic presence in Korn cannot be sneezed at), Switchblade Kittens (3 bassists, no guitar), Clatter (another bass/drums duo), Zombi (bass/keyboards duo)... Yeah, there's a lot of bass driven music out there. Even music that doesn't have bass guitar or upright bass, like a lot of techno, dance music, and Eurobeat are highly bass driven. Take the bass out and there's nothing.

I am assuming other than most funk bands,

    Mike Watt from minutemen
Tim Commerford has a nice place in RATM's mix as well

I'm surprised it took 18 posts before anyone mentioned Watt. One listen to the Minutemen or fIREHOSE leaves little doubt as to who's the boss.
