Bar magnet?

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by Davidoc, May 12, 2001.

  1. I have a Yamaha RBX 260 with a Bartolini 8s P pickup.

The Yamaha stock pickup had a bar magnet under each pickup box, but the Bartolini didn't. The bartolini works fine. Should I put the bar magnets from the stock pickup on the bartolini and see if it sounds any better? Does anyone know what these magnets do?

Why would you wanna do that? Thats how pickups work. -_- I wouldn't touch anything if it works fine..

Like DarkMazda said, don't mess with it. More magnet doesn't mean "better." If it did, someone would have come along and put the current pickup makers out of business with solid chunks of magnetized iron.

Too much magnet will pull you out of tune continuously, and that's just for starters.
  4. From what it says at the Bartolini site, pickups with bar magnets have a less focused, smoother overall tone than pups with individual pole pieces. Unless you're VERY handy, I'd say don't do it.
