I am looking for gritty jazz sounding pups, but more deep/beefy sounding than most replacement jazz pickups. Choices are Bartolini j9s, Carvin JVAs or Seymour Duncan Antiquity II. I am concerned the Bart's will be too smooth. The hype describes the neck pup "brightly" wound, & the bridge pup "deep", but the rear being "growly" (which doesn't make sense as growly tends to come from bright.

Never thought of Barts as "gritty" myself.

The j9 pups are hyped as wound to sound gritty. last one TB user said his j59s 'snarl & growl' plenty. The Bart's I ordered are 69s actually. I don't know what else will work w/my SR406 but Carvin JVAs. DiMarzio doesn't make 6 string pups.
