Anyone use these preamps? Overall impressions? http://www.bestbassgear.com/basslines-bass-preamps.htm I'm building my first bass and have a set of Duncan Designed JazzMan set if pickups (Warwick). Basically a MM dual HB in bridge position and Jazz @ neck. Would it make sense to go a little higher end on the preamp? http://www.bestbassgear.com/nordstrand-bass-preamps.htm I'm going for a clean but with mid boost bump, if ya get my drift. Not a big woofy bass tone.
I have a warwick with this set up and it gives a lot of mids, almost too much for me at times. I would describe it as aggressive.
Thanks for the feedback M_hubbert Do you feel that you can dial out the aggressiveness? I'll have the jazz pickup which should smooth out and distribute the tone. How's the battery life on these? I've got passive pickups, and I don't see a passive/active on off option. Thanks!
Well in my experience with it I could turn the highs completely off and still hear that "zing" in my bass. By pulling the mids down you can dial it out some but to me it lost what I liked about the aggressive tone it had. I wish they had set the freq points a little differently for the highs and mids. Now with an amp or preamp EQ I could really get it to where it would smooth out AND keep the some of the bite that I do like about this pre. I've never had an issue with batteries but I only play for about 5 hours a week. I think I've waited prob 6-9 months to change them and they still had some shock left. This pre does not offer a passive option. I posted I thread about it a couple of weeks ago and a guy replied that he has done extensive research on this it found no way as of yet to wire a passive option. Though I will say I've recorded with this bass and gotten a lot of complements on the tone it had. PM me if you would like to hear a couple of tracks. BTW these weren't done in my basement. They were mixed and mastered by a pro guy in nashville. It's over dubs of a live set where we retracked everything but Vocals and drums. Hope this helps!
Here's the post about the A/P option. The Duncan preamp is unlike almost all other preamps I have worked with and I have tried many times to wire one with the active passive option. The problem is the volume pot is at the end of the line after the signal from the pickups has passed through the balance pot and preamp. This makes it impossible to wire a switch separate or use the push pull of the volume pot for active passive switching with any control of tone or volume. With normal preamps the balance and volume are adjusted before going through the preamp board only the Duncan has it after so unless you are willing to have two volume pots you can’t do it with having any control over volume. This has been my experience with them and standard switching and I have worked on more than 50 preamps with all kinds of custom wiring. If anyone else has done it I would love to know how they did it because I have literally spent hours trying to figure out how to do it and with the knowledge and experience I have it was a fail every time.
Thanks M! I was buried in work and didn't have time to reply. There's a good likelihood that I'll go with this Pre-Amp. I have a tendency to try new things though . I installed the bridge pickup in my test bass body and will install the neck pick up once I get the router template this week. I like the idea of having a split coil option on the bridge (like on a Lakland), but I'll gauge that decision on how it sounds with the neck pu in place. I definitely like Aguilar OBP-3, and Nordstrand 2 Band (had a Nordy). Not much of a Bart Pre fan any longer. But it'll all depend on what I hear in these pickups passive. Thanks again for your detailed info
You may try wiring the vol/ blend ahead of the pre instead of after- some other pres can be wired either way. Values from vol/blend pot are same as from pups. Then you can add a/p switch.. (just because it's not in their suggested wiring doesn't mean it can't be done).
