I need suggestions for a good mid price ($400-$500) bass amp.

I use a fender deluxe jazz bass with active controls and such

I will be using it for home recording

the bass sound im going for is between the following:

    The Birthday Party
    Dead Bolt
    Black Sabbath
    Big Black
    Joy Division
    The Stranglers

can anyone please suggest an amp that can help me get in that direction ?

would a combo suffice? or should i look into a head, etc ?
any opinions on which is better for my purposes- swr or ampeg?

combos are realy good. ecspecially in a budget. ampeg makes good combos. im not to fond of swr stuff. mayeb their upper line stuff, but the cheaper stuff never has done me any good. if look into ashdown mag series combos. very good amps. good luck.

The Fender Bassman Series Combo Amps have been very nice to me.

    I own the 60 watt

You can find them at most music shoppes too, so you don't have to worry about getting it shipped to you.

60 watts isn't a lot of power though, they make them in 100 and 200 as well.

Ill second that Fender comment, but also check out the Peavey range of combos. Especially the TNT series :)
