Debut Single "The Duel" from upcoming Bravo Victor EP released Bravo Victor is a Newcastle based Bass and Voice Duo. Its members comprise of Bassist Jonathon Burgess and vocalist Sophie Aked. Both musicians have a very different approach to writing and listing to music, which stems from their different musical backgrounds; Jono’s in Jazz and Sophie’s in Classical and pop music. Bravo Victor’s sound could be described as a ‘melting pot’ of these genres’ harmonic language and performance practices.
I really like the voice! The bass could have done a lot more though, I think - a more interesting part that went beyond the merely utilitarian would have been nice!
Nice collaboration, something a bit different. I like it. The singer seems to be following all the rules on how to "hip sing":
+1. A lot of great bass players right now are, to my ears, really guitarists playing bass. They play lots of chords, yes, but beyond that the entire attitude and approach towards the instrument seems more like a guitar than a bass. It might be an absence of attention to rhythm, I'm not sure. In whatever case, I like these guys a lot but I think of them them a little differently in my mind. Janek Gwizdala and Gary Willis (for example), in other words, are both awesome but aren't 100% playing the same instrument in my own mental categorization.
