Hello Folks! This is my first post on TalkBass and I'm afraid it does not start on a light note! Just the other day I was playing bass in my room, getting into the groove, while some friends of mine were over. One of my mates pulled out my lead and told me to stop the racket as he was trying to watch the tv. They then started going on about how the bass is not a proper instrument and that it takes no skill to play. At this point I started to get pretty annoyed. They said that a guitar is much cooler and that I should play that instead! Now I know they were only joking about as no offence was really intended but I'm getting pretty fed up of how people see the bass. I know people who play guitar that seem to think that just because they can play guitar they can play the bass like Jaco. To play a bass well it needs to be played with feeling - thats what really counts. I don't think its right that the bass doesn't get the respect and recognition it really deserves. When people listen to a band and see them on MTV they just care how good the guitarist looks. I could go on! Well I feel much better now I've got that off my chest! Feel free to post your opinions.
