I know Mas Hino, Sadowsky, and Fodera are based in New York. While I try to go around and check out instruments, any other suggestions for luthiers/companies worth visiting in the area?

Spector is near Woodstock, but they don't give tours. Steinberger is in Newburgh (or used to be). MTD, Mike also lives in Woodstock and used to make basses there. There are number of smaller brands in the area as well. Even though Woodstock did not take place in Woodstock, NY, it is still a Mecca for musicians and luthiers. I live in the next town over and have had the good fortune to have met some great luthiers.

It should be mentioned here these guys are all within 20 miles or so of each other (Tobias, Spector) also don't forget the legendary Veillette-Citron what SWEET basses they made back in the 80's. They are separated now but still make instruments in the woodstock area. Joe Veillette and Harvey Citron. Also don't forget Martin Keith guitars...
You may see more bass luthiers per square mile here then anywhere else.
