We saw Oleta Adams over the weekend and her bassist, John Pena, who is unbelievably good, was playing this bass. Anyone know what it is? It seemed to be missing tuners but saw later the tuners are angled back from headstock face. Just curious...

Yep, Status T-Bass. I saw Chris Maresh playing one of those with David Grissom in Austin a while back.
I forgot all about these! Very cool. It seems like Trace Elliot used this platform to really experiment and develop some neat features. Was there any specific benefit to the headstock design other than angling the tuners for greater ease when tuning? Was it providing more mass at the headstock or something? Based on the online demos, the pickups and preamp sound great.

Yup those old Trace Elliot T-Basses, haven't seen one of ages.
I have an old P Basses modified to be a midi bass, and it had John's name tagged on it.

I met Brandon Fields and the first thing I said to him was how much I dug Pena's playing on those albums. Pena is also Steve Lukather's running partner on a lot of Luke's side projects.
