Hey TB I would appreaciate your insight on the following bass I found on Kijji. I'm looking for a bass that I can upgrade and modify if needed ie. add a hipshot tuner, new bridges etc. I think for the price it looks good and the body wood and pickups are interesting. I have not played the bass yet but would be interested to see any feedback you may have on the bass. Thoughts? http://peterborough.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-musical-instruments-guitars-Parts-Jazz-Bass-W0QQAdIdZ509884271
I used a wax finish on a body once, and liked the look and feel of it. Ash body/rosewood neck is different from the typical ash/maple or rosewood/alder, but nothing says it's bad. I saw a thread for an NYC Sadowsky in ash/morado, which is equivalent. Seems like a good price. Go play it, listen to the tone, and see if it talks to you and says, "Take me home!"
I would say the price look good if you are satisfied with the bass as is. If it is an upgrade project you would probably be better trying to find a cheap mim jazz and ( if necessary ) upgrade away... A $ 300 parts bass that may cost you an extra couple of hundred in upgrades isn't really a great deal imho.
