Okay here's the idea: There always seems to be TBers looking for people to verbally describe the sound of certain basses because they don't have the opportunity to personally try them out (me included). Instead of verbally and subjectively trying to descibe a bass tone why not recommend songs that feature the particular tone? There will be different opinions on what exact instruement was used of course, but at least we would be listening to the same tone.

For example one of my favourite examples of the tone of a Rickenbacker 4001 strung with flats (I think) is The Beatles 'Old Brown Shoe'. I'd also love to know what bass Paul used on 'Glass Onion'.

Although a bass will typically yeild a variety of different sounds from the same model due to technique, strings, pu's, amp/recording settings, filtering/shaping there are still songs that capture the epitome of a certain bass.

Anyone care to share their own favourite examples? :bassist:

the big problem with defining how a particular bass sounds based on recordings is the amount of variables besides the bass that go into the final tone
the direct box, amp, cabinets, mic, mic preamp, compressor, eq for the mix (probably with a fair amount of frequency slotting), and mastering have a big impact on the final tone you hear
not to mention the tremendous impact the particular player has.........
to be fair you'd proably have to do something like the basstasters website with one player using the same equipment each time except for the bass itself.
    sorry...... :meh:

If I could get my hands on a Rick strung with flats, i'd gladly add that to the basstasters library! :D
