I have a Spector Legend 4S that I love but I am thinking of buying a less expensive 4 string as a dedicated Drop D tuned bass for heavier Rock tunes. Anyone have any suggestions for a sub $400 Bass that would be good fro heavier metal/rock, etc?

My personal favorite is still a Fender, many heavy rock bassists used Fenders, like Duff for instance. Another nice way to go might be the Ibanez Iceman bass or the Epiphone T-bird

Mexican Fender. Used mine for Drop D tuning with no problems, both Jazz and Precisions. Ibanez Soundgears are always a pleasure, or even a cheapie OLP Stingray copy with an upgraded pickup or preamp.

ESP LTD series, pick your body style. Spector Rebop or a used higher grade Spector would be a great bet too.
  5. SX basses are very trashable and thrashable! At $100, you can't afford not to have one.

Yeah, it's possible to buy an SX. A friend of mine has SX clone of Gibson Les Paul, and it is not as bad as the price might suggest... And if you go for bass - SX quality should suffice for metal, as the bass is not very prominent.
Another suggestion would probably be Ibanez - 'okay' quality for a low price.

Yeah that's what I am leaning towards but wondered if anyone else had better experience with a certain other brand, etc. Thanks guys.

ESP/LTD B series basses have a great D string and are just an overall good metal bass. Just bought a B-304 that sounds killer through two 15s. :D
