Would playing my bass through a guitar amp screw the amp up?

Only if you consider blowing the speakers completely.

it's not going to kill the amp right away, but it'll sound like ****.

when my dad played bass in the late 60's and earily 70's.
(he was only 12-13 at the time).
he used a marshall 4 10 guitar amp. and a another guitar amp that was a 15. they were both tube and they never had a problem. the 15 sounded better though

Don't do it! It would be like using a Yugo to go four-wheelin'!
