BASS USED ON YES' "OWNER OF THE LONELY HEART" RECORDING

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Glenn Johnson, Oct 10, 2019 at 10:24 AM.

  1. Well, the title says it all. Did Chris Squire use his Rickenbacker or something else on "Owner of the Lonely Heart"?

I think I remember reading that he used his green Mouradian bass on that song, and I believe he used it on the video too.

edit: According to the Wiki, he used two basses, an Electra MPC Outlaw and the Mouradian.

Def not Ric as stated already. Not sure it was the Mouradian either. I believe it was whatever his fretless was at the time? Being a CS fan since ‘72 I should know this... CRS disease is setting in. :(

i believe it was his modded Electra MPC. I think he used it because he liked the plug in chorus module.

I know he used that bass when he played it live.

I don't know if I can find the link again but in a somewhat-recent video about that song Trevor Horn specifically said of the bass track that the bass had a sub-octave circuit built in!

    Here it is:

At 9:50 or so. Mentions the bass had a phaser as well. You can definitely hear the sub in the track.

Jim Mouradian was a really nice guy. Fixture in Boston. I didn't know he even made basses, much less one for Chris Squire.

Dang, now I want one. And I have no reason to want one other than it's really cool.

    The thot plickens!

In the 1983 promo vid he's playing the Mouradian CS

In live shows from that era he's playing the Mouradian CS

    2009 without Trevor Rabin

    Electra MPC

So, I'm not so sure now...can't find early vids with the Electra MPC

Playing the Electra MPC much later during Union Tour in 1991

I got to see "YES" on their reunion tour and he did not use his Ric on that particular song. I was too far away to be able to see what he was using but it looked like maybe a Spector or something along those lines. Chris however, used any number of basses live so this is no real conclusion as to what bass he used on the recording.

He not only made Chris a bass, he also made the band a rug and smuggled it into the Boston Garden disguised as a Roadie and presented it to the band.

Jim was MAGIC and the most positive person I've ever met. Love You & Miss You Jim.

For the recording of the track, everything is said in the Wikipedia article. On stage he used both according to the track-listing. Because Owner Of was sometimes preceded by Cinema, on which he plays with the Electra MPC to have the Flanger effect of the album version. But I guess that when it was not the case he prefered the Mouradian CS, probably because the Electra has only a P pickup.
