    Hello bass brothers and sisters,

This is our monthly weekend at The Ranch for Arnie Newman's Country Club Band. We debuted a couple of Amanda's songs from her album. They could've gone better but we'll work out the kinks tonight.

Surprisingly, there were no major accidents or traffic snarls on Friday afternoon as I made my way into the OC.

I arrived in the midst of a full mosh pit of setup. Johnny's keys were all over. Arnie was performing surgery on his pedal board. Jason was make sure his drums worked. They did. Jed was setting up his Kemper unit. All I had to do was plug in my bass so I waited for the fray to settle.

I was hear so early that the barstools were still upside down. That's good. We were able to run a couple of new tunes before doors opened.

Hey! I know those guys! A couple of big screens let the audience know all the haps.

After sound check we settled into the green room for supper. I had my favorite meal, the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and Heirloom Beet Salad. It's gourmet stuff.

While we sup, Dev is teaching a beginning two-step class. It's fun stuff.

Looky here! Johnny Magic Fingers is tinkling the accordion that the owner purchased for the backline. Johnny's really good at that thing. It comes in handy for the Flaco solo when the owner sings "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down". Since Andrew like to sing the vintage country, I start off the night with my Fender JBS.

I think John is really happy he gets to show off his new toy. It's on a wireless mic so he can stand up front and center for his solo.

Here's the front line. I'll be Amanda is singing a sassy girl song. "Let's go girls!"

Jason was quite tasty and played with some finesse tonight. I had to compliment him. It made the night more fun.

The mad scientist at work. When Jed sang "On The Road Again" Johnny pulled out his harmonica patch. It really does sound great.

We're having fun now! Amanda and Arnie pose for me during the intro.

The lovely Melanie visits with the band. Here's a "Beauty and the Beast and the Steel player" picture.

Our DJ Leo plays all the favorite line dances while we're on a break. We play a few line dances too.

Oh look, here's Melanie again, dancing in front of her favorite bass player.

Arnie is fracturing some lyrics and having a good time.

On my way home I stopped to pick up one of my favorite Lagunitas brews. Then I discovered a leftover can of Garage Mango Hefeweizen. I couldn't decide so I drank both.

It was a light crowd at the club tonight. Our last set was a "power 20". I find it a bit odd because seventy five patrons at the end of the night in just about any other bar would be a pretty good crowd. I heard tonight (Saturday) is sold out, all the tables and booths are reserved, so it should be a jumpin' joint. Thanks for looking!

    Thank you for your indulgence,

Best of luck! (Not that you'll need it!). The Ranch is my favorite place I've never been to.

    Hi Cliff,

I was able to tune in the live stream for the 10:30ish set. The band was sounding really good. Arnie ripped a solo that were way more rock than country (forget the song title). The man is a serious shredder. Amanda sounded great on a Merle song (forget the title). You had a really good lead vocal song, but I'm blanking on the title. (Notice an old guy memory pattern here?)

The live stream is so cool. Next best thing to being there.

    Hi guys,

It's pretty much my favorite performance venue. It's really got top notch gear for the stage.

Grant, thanks to you and @Admiral Akbar for tuning in. Friday night was fun but Saturday night was much better because we had a great crowd. I was going to check our set list to see which songs you are talking about, but I forgot. Sorry. ;) But thanks for the kind words. I took a few more pictures. I'll share them in the next post.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    Hi!

I took a few pictures of my Saturday night adventures at The Ranch. It was a not-too-fun commute down the 57 freeway on Saturday evening.

There was not one, but two accidents on the 57 freeway between me and The Ranch. It doubled my commute time. I'm glad I left the house a little early.

I was still the first to arrive. My trusty Fender Kingman ABG was waiting patiently in the green room for me to run some tunes.

But first I ordered supper from the band menu with my name on it.

I had the four chicken tenders with a chopped kale salad. I didn't eat all my fries, my jeans are getting too tight.

It's a great crowd in the club tonight. Our DJ Leo is playing the last line dance before we hit.

Johnny had donned his weapon of mass destruction but Arnie is not scared.

It was a really fun night. Jed is playing more of his electric guitar now. He's actually a really good guitar player and vocalist. It'll be great when he finds his niche in the band.

Oh yeah, Jed was singing "Keep Your Hands To Yourself". It's along guitar intro. That's why I'm taking pictures now.

I grab a picture of Bam Bam.

And one of Johnny Magic Fingers.

Here's a view of the front line from the back line.

The lovely Ms. Amanda Kate hasn't taken a selfie with me all weekend. We remedy that situation right now.

And then we play our last set. Since it was such a good crowd we played right up til the bitter end.

I think Amanda is giving Arnie a dirty look because he is tuning in the middle of her song.

After the end of the performance the band begins the tear down parade as the DJ plays out the night.

That's all the pictures I got. I'm sure a few more will show up on the socials. Thanks for looking!

For those of you able to see this Facebook link, here's a bit of one of Amanda's album cuts we did this weekend.

    Hi!

We kid John about playing the a accordion but the guy can really tear it up.

It was a nice weekend at The Ranch. I think we're back here the weekend after Gilley's next month.

  9. Nothing wrong with accordion. It's the universal instrument. From Polish polkas to Tex-Mex, to Irish fiddle tunes to some African stuff. It beats dragging around a grand piano to do an acoustic set!

I tuned in again last night. Usually you can't hear a lot of audience response on the stream. Last night you heard a LOT! Great crowd for sure. The band was on fire.

The "Bradley Cooper" moment made me laugh out loud.

    Hi guys,

John and I have talked about doing a ukulele-accordion duet on our fly dates. We're hoping the flight staff would give us beer to shut us up! :p

There were three big birthday parties, a bridal party, and a wedding upstairs that filtered down into the club later. It was a great crowd.

Before we sing "Shallow" I try to make a little joke about how Amanda and I were up for a couple of parts in a recent movie. Unfortunately Amanda was way too cute and talented and I was way too much NOT like Bradley Cooper. But that night I just could not remember his name. The secret to comedy is......uh, .....um,..... timing. :D

Thank you sir. I try to please.

He's quite the talent. I enjoy working with him.

Let me come right back with more pictures fro that night taken by the resident photographer, DJ Leo.

    Hi,

Here's more fun, proof, evidence, whatever, from last weekend at The Ranch.

The owner sits in. Johnny on accordion.

I think Jed and I both really enjoy Andrew's singing. Randy just concentrates on his steel.

Johnny had a blast getting out from behind his castle of keyboards.

Randy loves to geek the camera.

    The duet.

Swing dance couples on the floor.

    Here's a cowboy cha-cha dance.

Amanda does a sassy girl song, probably about partyin' and drinkin'.

    The Daisy Dukes were out.

Let's see what we can find from Saturday night in the next post. Thanks for looking!

    Hi,

Here's some fun from Saturday night.

    I think John's a little worried that I don't have enough strings.

Arnie better watch out. Johnny's making his move, front and center, for a solo.

    Dang, that girl is cute.

Uh, oh. Randy has something up his sleeve.

    Ten steppers on the floor.

John is safe behind his castle of keyboards now. We are safe from the accordion.

Wow, this picture actually makes me look like I know what I'm doing.

This is Mona and her birthday party. Fun!

    Lovely line dancers.

I like it when Jed plays his Strat. He's a really good guitar player. He's still finding where he fits in the band. I think it will be a good fit. He sings well too.

Of course, this lady is always terrific.

Everybody on the floor. Let's dance!

That was Saturday night. Thanks for stopping by. You guys are the best. Thanks for putting up with me.

The funny part was when you couldn't remember his name. It was "...uh... um... oh forget it, I'm just the bass player." Then just as Jason it counting the next song off you remembered the name and said "BRADLEY COOPER" between four and the first chord. You looked a little sheepish at that moment. (Sorry for pointing out a faux pas but seeing you're not perfect gives the rest of us hope. ;))

I'm with you on the Strat. Sits in the mix better and sounds great with Arnie's Tele. He's a true singer too. A band with five bona fide lead singers is golden.
