Hi gang, Let me toss up this gig report before I leave for my next gig, my fourth gig on this Memorial Day weekend. Me and the KRB played in Newport Beach at the Newport Dunes Boot On The Beach Festival. Here's your sign. {} We played under this big tent. It sounded just like a big tent. But it wasn't bad once it got full of people. {} We parked around back to unload. We had a nice view of the marina. {} Pickleback Shine was on stage doing their sound check. There are a lot of people on stage (8). Their band has a big sound. Justin, Steve, Greg, and all these folks were friendly and easy to share the stage with. {} Here's a view of the bridge going across the bay and the beach on the far side. It was a very nice day. {} We'll revisit that bridge later. Here's Kyle running FOH. We've worked with him before. We had a quick, professional sound check. Tyler was the stage manager. He was a very helpful chap too. {} Skip looks great in his new hat. He did a great job this weekend picking up Daniel's vocal parts. {} Mario knows what to do when the sound guy says, "Gimme some kick drum." {} Both bands fit all their stuff on stage. @Greg_S was going to let me use his rig but he's on the wrong side. {} Speaking of @Greg_S, we got to chat a bit after sound check. I didn't realize that he was a member. It's always a treat to meet another Talkbass brother. {} I thought this was really cute. Pickleback Shine has their own swag wagon. {} We all got vouchers for food so we hit up the barbecue tent. {} There was only the one food vendor at this gig. I'm glad we ate early. The line was outrageous later in the evening. I had the tri-tip plate with beans and corn. (Why are country gigs almost always beans and barbecue?) {} The beer van was doing a great business. They had full bar service too. {} The crowd has arrived! {} The Kelly Boys and their wives got the crowd going with dance lessons. {} That's Shane doing the DJ duties while his wife calls the steps. {} The Kelly Boys teach the two-step just before we start our set. {} Here's my amp-selfie just before we hit it. {} Art, Paul, and Kelly are ready to rock this beach. {} I'll be right back! Thanks for looking! Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Hi! Skip tips his hat to all the ladies. {} Mario is ready, willing, and able to kick some drum. {} Kelly gets the show started. {} The crowd loves their ten-step. {} To me it seemed there were at least a couple thousand people here, maybe more. {} One of the Kelly wives teaches another line dance before we start our second set. {} It was a lovely line dancing crowd. {} Even Kelly helped out when teaching "The Wobble". {} Yes, I really did play for a crowd this big. This is probably in the top five largest crowds we've ever played for. {} We actually took this picture before downbeat. We all wore red, white, and blue to honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day. {} After our second set we cleared the stage quickly so that @Greg_S and Pickleback Shine could take the stage. {} I really liked his hoppy cowboy shirt and his Wilkens bass. Here's the whole band tearing it up. {} {} One more parting shot of Greg holding down the fort. {} Then it was time for me to roll my gear out to the parking lot. We couldn't stay parked behind the tent, unfortunately. {} It was a fabulous event, perfect weather, great crowd, nice sound system, good food, lovely scenery, the whole nine yards. It was great to meet you Mr. @Greg_S! I hope our paths cross again soon. Thanks for looking! Please share your gigs too! Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Great gig Cliff. Sorry I missed it. I would have been there but I had a previous commitment to see another friend's gig. Really nice crowd size! Glad to see my absence didn't make it seem small It looks bigger then the one at Costa Mesa's park gig you played last summer, and that was a big crowd. Newport/Mesa folks know how to turn out for you guys
WOW!! That's a lot of people, there!!! Great report, (as usual...) glad to see you guys all having fun on the holiday. (...and getting paid for it, too!) Looking forward to the next one. Thanks, again - Dan
Hey peeps! I was hoping to see you there since we were close. Next time. I still want to see the GHG sometime soon too. You're very welcome. It was a very fun crowd. Thanks Dan. We had fun and honored our fallen. It was a good day. I understand. Now go and sing ten "Wagon Wheels" and drink six beers for your penance. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Great turnout! Looks like a fun gig. People really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Can't ask for more than that.
Hey Chris, My next True Willie gig is this coming Sunday, we've actually got a DOUBLE! June 4 – Tustin Chili Cookoff 11:30a – 1:30p June 4 – Brea Summerfest 4:00–5:30pm It's going to be tight getting from one to the other. At least the second gig is backlined. I'm hoping there are no freeway snafus. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Off topic, but my only time in Newport Beach was when a buddy and I hitchhiked to Tucson from the bay area during spring break in 1970. We slept on the beach, between two apartment buildings that had spotlights pointing at the water. We needed matches to start a little campfire, but the guy who gave us a ride gave us a lighter saying it was superior. It might have been had it worked. We also leaned out backpacks in front of a fire hydrant and one of us would stand on it holding a destination sign while the other would shout, "Pick up the world's tallest hitchhiker!" carnival barker style. I just saw my buddy Dave who was my road companion this past weekend in Tucson where he lives. Played a lot of Irish music and rude songs. We're still causing trouble and having fun. Now back to Kellie's white pants....
Hi, Speaking of which, here are a couple of video clips provided by the staff photographer, just to give you an idea of what a fun gig it was. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Cliff! Finally nice to meet you brother! If you guys have never heard Cliff play, you're missing out. This guy is solid as they come and can sing too! Mad props to you Cliff! I did see you yesterday with the Wilie band in Tustin but you were busy. Sounded awesome BTW. Thanks for the shout out at Boots on the Beach. That is an awesome venue and crazy big crowd. I think the final tally for headcount was 3000+. Amazing what we get to do! Greg
Hey @Greg_S! It was great to meet you too, brother. Sorry I didn't see you in Tustin. We did take a little break for the square dance demonstration but when we were done we had to load out quickly to get to Brea for a 3pm downbeat. We made it. Yes, it's amazing the things we get to do. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
