I've always played 5 string basses(currently elrick evolutions) tuned standard or maybe drop A and am venturing into playing with a progressive metal band that uses 8 string guitars tuned down to drop F and drop E I believe or lower I can't recall.

Question is: is my bass capable of hanging this low? Need far lower gauge strings I would imagine..but do I need a 6 string bass? Or something like ding wall or modulas w graphite neck to support? Want tightness not floppyness

    Thanks for any input!

Not sure why you'd need to go with a six. As someone who plays fives and sixes, you should know that the six is a lot more real estate to cover when you're playing, and if you don't need it, then don't do it. Heavy gauge strings and a good setup job should do you fine as far as covering that range.

I'm too lazy to do the research to find out what he uses, but Steph Carpenter from the Deftones often plays an 8-string guitar, and Sergio Vega plays 4-string basses (Fender Ps, iirc). You might want to check out what Vega's setup is.
