The V-bass system involves installing their funky pickup to the bass you want to use with the floor unit. Does a bass even need to have its own other pickups for the vbass to function? If someone were to build a bass with the V-bass system specifically in mind for use, could the base be bare of any other pickups or electronics?

    Yes.

Though, the system allows you to mix the V-Bass COSM sound with the output of YOUR bass. So, you can mix "real" bass with synth sounds, for instance. You can't do that if your bass doesn't have any real pickups.

You can also get (currently) piezo bridge pickup systems that will interface directly to Roland products (from RMC), and (soon) optical bridge pickup systems that will do the same (from Lightwave).
