Basses I HAVE to try... under 2k

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Inconnu, Feb 27, 2016.

  1. Hi!

Yup, I feel like hunting that "last" pricey bass... within 1 year, I'm not in a hurry. I'd like suggestions on what I should try, in the sub 2000$ category (new), but it can be as low as it can get. What I'll be looking at are fretted 4 to 6 string electric bass guitars (including hollow and semi-hollow) that would be a good addition to my actual line-up of keepers, consisting of :
    - Vintage Ibanez Destroyer
    - G&L L-2500
    - Godin BG4 (active modern bass)
    - Spector Spectorcore
    - Fretless Fender Jazz
    - Squier Bass VI

I'd like suggestions on what current models to try. So far, I've seriously looked into the obvious :
    - Fender P
    - Fender J
    - Musicman Stringray, Sterling and Bongo
    - Gibson T-bird

Ideas for a bass that's not at all like what I already have?

I've been leaning towards a hollowbody myself for a bit different flavor. Can't speak to the guild starfire, but I've tried the Lakland skyline hollow body and a Gibson midtown. Both were excellent, but the midtown to me had a nicer sound.

Nash, Ben Lindsey, Bluesman are all in the Fender family. You can get a bass made to your specs for $2,000.

Check out one of the MTD Kingston basses. I recently bought a ZX5 (which is their top of the line Kingston model, though still a step down from their custom stuff) and I'm totally in love with it. Technically more than 2000 new, but you can get em used for about half price nowadays.

The other kingston models are all under 2000, and definitely have their own unique vibe not covered by others in this thread. Worth checking out.

Too bad you won't consider used. You could have a Roscoe or USA Spector and just stop there, and even more than likely sell everything else since they will never be played again :)

But if you must have new, look into Lakland Skylines.

  15. Cool...

I had the following in mind too, should I bother tracking some down (anybody has experience with those?):
    - Gibson SG bass
    - Ibanez Black Eagle (cheaper then what I'm looking at, but unique in it's own kind of way)
    - Epiphone Jack Casidy

Ones I'd say you should try that would be a good addition to your current lineup are:

Peavey Cirrus 5 or 6 (you should REALLY try the neck on one of these, just to raise your personal bar for what a good neck feels like)
EBMM Sterling 5 H or HS (I would not really even bother with an HH)
