Basses with humbuckers seem to do it for me.

  4. Billy Sheehan Attitude, anyone?

  5. G&L L-series... they growl like an attack dog on crack. :D

  6. Try a MusicMan Sub with the passive electronics. I've fallen in love with the one that we have hanging in the guitar shop where I work. It has the MusicMan vibe, but it's a lot meatier than the StingRays. I'll second the G&Ls, too. They sound great.

G&L's have been known to kill babies and small animals with their growl.

Rickenbacker 4003. Great highs, booming lows, and the growl that typified 70's rock. Listen to 'roundabout' by Yes to really hear the 4003 in full fight. Also, i agree with the musicman basses. nasty, gritty tone that just screams nastay.

    So true.

    Nothing growls like a G&L.......nothing.

I have an Attitude LTD I and it has nice growl, but then I also picked up a Gibson blackbird. The Nikki Sixx signature with the direct outs (no volume or tone) and pick up mounted directly on the wood (w/o foam). It's has allot of growl through an old SVT.

  13. I agree but bear in mind that Roundabout was recorded with some element of distortion on the bass tone. I believe it was actually played through a guitar amp IIRC. Not sure though, can anyone clarify this for me?

I just picked up an atk and I am amazed at how much growl it has when you crank up the mids.
