Bassists that sing

Discussion in 'Bassists [BG]' started by swassguy, Feb 19, 2004.

  1. I've always had trouble even talking when I play, but now I'm getting involved with a three piece that doesn't appear to have anyone else to do the job. We could make instrumentals, but I thought that maybe I could take on the task of learning how to sing and play at the same time

Which groups have a bass playing singer? I want as wide a range as possible so I can see some very different options.

He was mentioned earlier, but Richard Bona is like the epitome of bassist singer. For one, he has a smooth voice, and is always in tune, additionally, he is fluent in 3 languages and sings in all of them, on top of that, he sings melodies over basslines during his solos, like, making his voice the lead instrument, not just singing the notes of his solo. it's really neat.

check him out with Mike Stern on 'voices' and 'these times' to get a good idea what I'm talking about, he also appears on a pat metheny album, and he has 3 solo albums of his own(I only have munia, but it's great)

Additionally, Victor Wooten is no stranger to singing and playing, 'me and my bass guitar', yinnin and yangin, hormones in the headphones...etc. He does a good job.

Oh yeah, and my personal favorite, MC divinity! Not only can she sing while playing bass, but she also raps while doing it :D and both her bass playing and her rapping are exquisite.

The top 4 bands all have fairly simple basslines with only occasional little fills. The bottom 4 bands all have very good bassists so therefore good basslines.
