I'm trying to decide between an LTD F-5E and an LTD F-155. They both have the same electronics, but the F-5E has a Mahogany body with an Ebony top and fretboard, the F-155 is Basswood with flamed maple top and rosewood freatboard. The F-5E is neckthrough and the F-155 is bolt-on. I've been looking for information on both mahogany and basswood, but they are only compared on weight. I know the neckthrough should have more sustain, but what I'm concerned with is the tone, I read that Mahogany is "darker". I play mostly Thrash and Death Metal, I want a tone similar to Frank Bello and Alex Webster (as much as my budget lets me), which would fit best, basswood or Mahogany? None of them are available at any store to try them out and there's only one video for each one and, as in 99% of all bass reviews, they play only slap bass. PS: I just realized the "bass guitar world" is kind of funny, ESP is a brand targeted at HEAVY music and many "light music" players play with them, same goes the other way with Fenders. So unlike electric guitars.
