I finally have gotten really comfortable playing “I’ve Been Working,” kind of a swinging, but funky slap tune from Luther Vandross’ debut album with Marcus Miller on Bass, of course. On the first album, the only song without Marcus Miller was “A House is not a Home,” with Anthony Jackson crushing it on his “Working Girl,” his detuned Jazz with a Precision neck. Now, that I have been playing my Geddy awhile, I am finding that it gets VERY close to Marcus Miller’s pre-preamp tone, even if it has a lighter alder body. For comparison, listen to my Carvin SB5000, with a 10lb ash body, play the same song:
Being able to hear them side by side, the SB5000 sounds way different from the geddy.... Brighter with less mids. Apart from probably strings and pickups, I wonder if the 5000 being a 5 string is responsible? My jazz bass still sounds completely different than both of yours. but now that I have the tony franklin with its roundwounds, Im thinking it's the flats on the jazz. The TF just sings, but I can hear it "unplugged" too. Meaning, I want my jazz bass to sound more like the TF so looks like Ill be putting a set of rounds on it. Sorry for rambling. Great sound comparison! I assume it's the same amp in each? L
I think the biggest difference between my Geddy and SB5000 is wood. The Geddy is alder and 8.5-9lbs, while the SB5000 is ash and 10lbs. In passive mode, the Carvin is scooped too.
That slap tone was what what always drew me to the Geddy. It has that pure, passive slap tone without the weird looking pickguard that you get with the old Marcus Miller Signature Jazz.
Both sound good Doc. I prefer th SB 5000 slightly more. Not better or worse, just a different flavor. For my jazz sound I’m using a Sire V7. I have always liked the SB basses, but like it my Sire is ash and very heavy. The Geddy is a favorite of many.
You can’t beat ash for that natural scoop. I think the alder body of the Geddy makes is a better Rock Bass for sure, but the mids are good for more Old School/Neo Soul too.
+1 on preferring the Carvin. The Jazz isn't bad... I simply prefer the snappier/scooped tone out of the Carvin.
The SB5000 is perfect for the Marcus Miller tone. I don’t think any bass, does the active Jazz tone better.
Head to head, the SB5000 is better than most Sadowskys because it has the ash body and because its pickups are in the Seventies position. The UV (Ultra Vintage) Sadowsky series is probably even with the SB5000 or Keisel JB5.
I prefer by far the Carvin also you miss a slap or you are out of sync... it kinda drive my nuts a little
You are killing me doc. I made the decision to get a US Geddy a couple months ago. I have the money but new US Geddys are nowhere to be found.
I get that for sure. There's something about alder that's so balanced. No matter what pickups or strings I put on it, my mahogany bodied bass will never capture those alder or ash bodied tones. People like to say wood doesn't matter but I have a hard time agreeing. That geddy lee sounds amazing! Nails those beautiful 70s jazz tones. These may be interpreted as fightin' words, but have you ever thought about slapping some flatwounds on the Geddy?
