So I recently purchased a behringer x2442 mixer off thomann. I intend on using it at home as an audio interface, plugging the USB into my PC to record guitar, vocals etc. No speakers or anything connected, just USB, power and whatever I'm recording (normally XLR). I plugged my XLR mic into channel one, turned up the gain, volume fader, main mix fader, pressed down the main mix button on channel one and spoke into the mic. Nothing happened on the desk (like the lights that indicate level/clipping didn't light up). I tried again in another channel, same set up but nothing happened. I've been sitting around fiddling with stuff, looking online for solutions but I can't come up with anything, so I'm just wondering could anyone shed some light on the situation?
    Thanks in advance, Aidan

    Dear ichNinja,

Please allow me to introduce myself; my name is Sam Daniel and I am a Care Specialist at MUSIC in Las Vegas, NV, USA, where we service and manage spare parts for all MUSIC brands. From the description of the issue you are having, it does seem that there is a physical fault with the unit that goes beyond normal troubleshooting for the unit. However, just to narrow down the issue, are you using a condenser microphone? If so, then did you make sure that the phantom power switch on the back of the unit was set to the ON position? If you did, and the unit is still not functioning properly, then this would seem to point towards a physical fault with the unit and I would highly suggest having the unit exchanged through Thomann as soon as possible.

Hey Sam, I was using a Shure SM58 to record so no phantom power required. I was wondering if the fact that I have no speakers connected to the outputs, would be the problem or does that make any difference? I just have the USB cable connected. If not that then is there any little thing I'm missing? (e.g. a small button I haven't pressed down or something similar).

    Thanks for the response, Aidan

    Dear Aidan,

Thanks for replying back to me. It is not necessary to have speakers connected to the mixer to see the metering on the console. You can definitely verify if signal is properly passing through the channel by increasing the GAIN knob in the channel to it's maximum position and then looking at the CLIP light for that channel, which is located just above the channel's SOLO button. The CLIP light should be lighting up RED when you talk into the microphone, which will let you know that signal is present on the channel. If this CLIP light does not light up, then please try using a different XLR cable to connect the mic to the channel. If that does not help, then more than likely there is a fault with the mixer itself and it would recommended to have the unit exchanged through your retailer as soon as possible. I would also recommend trying to contact us directly via the phone numbers that I listed in my previous post just to verify the fault in real-time and to make sure that all possible troubleshooting for his unit has been covered properly.

    Hey Sam,

After trying that with full gain and I'm getting a signal, just have to turn the levels up quite high. I'm assuming this is normal. Thanks very much for the help, wouldn't have thought of doing that myself.

    Dear Aidan,

You're very welcome for the help, and yes, it is normal for the GAIN in each channel to be increased to a high level.

One thing I'll toss out there that is a big issue with the model and the one I have x1832usb is that the 2TR input (or USB Input) can not be sent back out via 2TR/USB if your monitoring it or sending it to the mix. It only goes out if its untapped.

Because of this when I want to record my backtrack I actually record my control room outputs instead of the main mix, but that means I lose the convenience of the USB recording.

The alternative is of course dont use the 2TR input but instead put it on one of your line inputs, but you cant use the USB as the input anymore and thats how I have it setup right now.

Also I recall my SM58 required quite a bit of gain as well before it got to acceptable volume.
I use condenser mic's 99% of the time for voice over work, I only break out the SM58 for special situations.
