I nominate "Papa Was a Rolling Stone". Was that Jamerson?

Pretty hard to beat that but what about the 3 note repetitive riff by Jamerson on
"Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher"
It's a deceptively simple but driving bass line. Chord changes go D-G-Em but the bass never ventures away from these three notes: A-B-D.

    Sweet. Great entry.
On the one hand, it's only 3 notes. On the other hand, the bassline has more notes because repetition for the sake of groove.

    You are correct.
The riff is 8 notes long using only A-B-D

Herbie Hancock's Chamleon. (Well, it's a 6 + 6, with the 2nd 6 transposed up from the 1st 6, and with two different end notes.)

I was thinking it was Bob Babbitt. It seems as though I read one time that it was GONNA' be Jamerson, but when they asked him to keep playing the same bassline over and over he got up and walked out. Not sure if that's true or not. I THINK I read that.

Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia". Six on the nose!
Miles' "So What" misses by 2.

This may not strictly fit the 6 note parameters :)

Bob Babbit and one of my favorite grooves, but far more than 6 notes in the pattern.
