if youre talkin just a head i would highly reccomend the carvin redline series. R600 or R1000. i would say go with the R1000, as its only a little bit more, and it puts out 1000 watts. i have an R600 and love it. i play everything through it. jazz, funk, classic rock, blues, hard rock, porno... the R600 is $570 the R1000 is $650 http://www.carvin.com good luck
I just got an Ashdown MAG-400 from The Bass Place in Arizona for $595 plus $20 shipping, but generally they're in the high $600s. 500W RMS, 1000 peak, with high/low inputs for passive/active basses, enough tone shaping for me (bass, mid, treble and a low and high mid control), bright and deep in and out buttons, the famous Ashdown sub harmonizer that thickens up the bass by adding a subharmonic tone to the note you're playing (which I don't use because I have an EBS octave pedal), 4 ohm head, MOSFET solid state preamp, dual cooling fans and the very cool Ashdown VU meter for the input signal strength. All in all a great head, all cased in ozite black carpet with plastic corners and a side handle. Can't go wrong for the price. It has power to spare and is very highly regarded--check out ashdownmusic.co.uk to see it and learn more, although I've given you a lot of info. Good luck.
I would look at the Ashdown Line. That is what RadioHeads bass player uses. Good line, good solid rock tone and very loud.
If you can find a used SWR Bass 750, I think you can get the sound you're after and have an amp that will handle loads all the way down to 2.6 ohms. I own a 750 and find it to be a loud/clean amp.
Colin uses neither the GK or the Ashdown. He does use the GK as a power amp, but uses an alembic pre.
