I have a P-Bass and have been wondering which Bartolini pickup would come the closest to the sound of Jamerson.

Bartolini currently have these pickups available for the passive P-Bass: 8S, 8ST, 8SU, and the 8SBP.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I've only tried the 8S, but my impression is that barts are too hi-def and sustaining to get the motown sound. I'm running labella flats and the sound is great but definitely not motown.

First off, thank you for the replys. Next, if Bartolini's aren't that close to the Motown sound then does anyone know what pickups on the market would be the closest to that sound?

most 'vintage' style P pickups and the bass strung with flatwounds.

My favorite P pickup is the Nordstrand NP4, but the Fralins are good for vintage sound also. There are others, but I haven't tried too many of them so can't comment.

Maybe you should try some of the Fender Custom Shop pickups.
