I'm getting an Essex fretless pbass and will probably
upgrade the p/u. Any suggestions for a guy on a budget? I can get an EMG Select from Stewmac for like $23. Anyone have any experience with them? Also, Mightymite has a prewired tortoise pickguard with their p/u for $49, or the p/u by itself for like $20. I'm considering replacing the pickguard also and am thinking the pots on the prewire are probably better than the stock Essex. Any other suggestions for a budget P p/u?
  2. scan ebay for a seymour duncan quarter pounder. one of the best for big p bass tone. I got mine for $45. I put it in a $99 kramer and it sounds great
  3. I have a Fender "Original" P-Bass pickup in my D-Bass Precision clone and it sounds great if you are looking for "vintage" tone.

Watch eBay for used USA Fender pickups. Lots of guys selling them after they swap out. You should be able to get them for around $30 - $35. I am not a big fan of the EMG selects. They are probably no better than what you will have in the stock Essex, maybe not as good.
