so what is the best combo for rock that cuts through with punch???

    410 with a 115

    810 cab

and also does two 410's sound good as one 810? is there a difference?

thinking of building one of these combo's of cabs.

no way to answer that. it depends upon the particular 4x10, 1x15, and 8x10. they all sound different. And, you may like something totally different than any of us. Also, if you plan on building cabs, make sure you match them to the particular speakers you use. They all like different size enclosures, it's not just putting a speaker in a box.

FWIW, before the advent of 1x12 cabs in the past few years, a quick perusal of bass player mag would show that there was a roughly 50/50 split between all 10 and 10+15 rigs, with the occasional oddballs. In general, 4x10's will be very punchy, but then again, a bag end 1x15 will knock a hole in your head. As far as two 4x10's sounding like an 8x10, yes and no. If the 4x10's are exactly half the size as the 8x10 with half of the porting (if any) and use exactly the same speakers, then yeah, it should sound pretty similar.
