I just bought Pink Floyd's 'Is There anybody Out There: The Wall Live', and wow, it was worth the purchase for the pakcaging alone. It has this hard case and inside it is a thick hard covered book with interviews with the band and hundreds of photos from the concert, and the CD's are stored inside the cover of the book. Best packaging I have ever seen. I have always thought that the covers to albums were important, they are just as good a place to showcase art as the album itself. That was the cool thing about vinyl records, they were perfect for great covers. What are some of the best cover artwork you can think of? Some that spring to my mind are the Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon', most Pearl Jam albums, (especially 'No Code', how cool are all those photos you get with the song info on the back of each photo), and Tool's 'Lateralus'. What do you think are the albums with the best ever artwork or packaging? Jim
I really like GWAR's Scumdogs of the Universe or Ragnarok, but I especially like the packaging for Violence Has Arrived. The artwork was done by Adrian Smith. At first I didn't like it -- too scary, but inside are close-ups of the guys' "new" faces and I decided that scary is good! I also absolutely love the new logo! Oops: GWAR's server seems to be down right now, so I will post a pic of the cover art when it's back up. Otherwise, check it out for yourselves at www.gwar.net!
I think the stuff that Jason Farelly does is really interesting. Not just the artwork, but different ways of manipulating the standard CD inlay card. Check out the latest releases by Bluetip, Fugazi, and Burning Airlines to see what I mean. He's developing quite the cottage industry in the DC area.
Has anyone seen the cover to Pink Floyds 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason'? They actually lined up tens of thousands of beds along the beach and took a photo of it! Everyone knows the cover of the Floyds 'Animals', you know, that huge powerstation in britain with the huge inflatable pig floating over the top of it. There is an interesting story about that. The actual pig was about the size of a bus, and filled with helium, it was just supposed to float above the power station, but its ropes snapped and the pig drifted into British airspace and disrupted air travel! Imagine the looks on the pilots faces when they were told that they couldnt fly because of a giant flying pig!!
Sometimes simplicity does the trick. Ever seen the cover of The Police's "Ghost In The Machine"??? Those red digital figures actually represent Sting, Stewart, and Andy. A black background with red figures... just enough for me... The covers of Rush albums are pretty cool too... and EW&F's are neat.
Gotta be King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King". I love that crazy guy on the cover, he looks mentally ill... Also gotta love Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother" and The Beatles' "Abbey Road" and "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band". ...ooh! And "Bitches Brew" by Miles!
radiohead-'ok computer' and 'kid a' if one can include art actually on the cd, the weezer-'pinkerton' nemo.
awww, poop...you beat me to it. i think all of the cradle of filth covers are first rate...d.a.h.e. is actually my least favorite, though...vempire and cruelty and the beast are my faves
