Best Head Under 600 Bucks?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by freshmeat1989, Mar 5, 2004.

  1. What is the best *new* head under $600 in your opinion. Tone? Wattage? Features? I'm gonna be upgrading my rig from a 10 watter to a head and cab setup. I'm pretty sure I'm getting an Avatar B212 and B210 but I need a toneful head that has 350 watts or more. I dont want to spend 200 bucks on a Sansamp either. How are the Peavey Max 450's. Yes I did search but I'm looking for more recent opinions.
  2. used GK 800RB.. rock solid, lots of power and very reliable.. my .02 cents..
  3. New Peavey Max 700...700 watts @ 2ohms, 475 watts @ 4ohms. Full of features including a crossover, tuner send, shiftable midrange, and of course the usual Peavey standard:preamp out/power amp in jacks

It's definetly worth checking out...has a ton of power and sounds great.
  4. I was thinkin of that or the 450. How is the tone. I heard its transparent and people like to add Sansamps on, I dont wanna spend the extra 200 bucks for one.

Check this source out for the best price for GK gear. You will have to e-mail for quote. They reply fairly quickly, depending on time of day you send request. If you find a better deal on new GK gear than this place, please tell me where.
  8. Hows the tone on that GK vs. the Peavey? Also how's the SWR WM's 4004?

^^^ I wish that had been around when I bought my head. (Hartke HA5500)

Ampeg B2R 200w@8ohm 350w@4, 9band EQ, pre in/outs, plenty of features, good tone imho. Got mine for $500 at guitar center, talked them down from $550.

been really digging SWR's Workingman series 4004 heads. whenever i goto GC, its the first head i plug into. warm, chewy tone, and the EQ sliders are voiced pretty nicely to get a great tone. if its good 'nuff for Rocco, good enough for me.

    QSC RMX850 (850W) - $300 (or buy mine used)
Sansamp RBI preamp - $300 (or ~$250 used)

you'll need a bit more for a rack and cables (maybe $75) but you'd have a killer setup with those Avatars...

    just something to consider.

That Rocco head SWR Workingman 8004 T/O/P. is a different beast (voice architecture) altogether but I'm seriously 'gassing' for it! 750w!!

  15. I was thinkin SWR but the 4004 is not enough wattage!
