So what do you guys think the best metal riffs are?

Id say either, master of puppets or jump in the fire by metallica

however holy wars and symphony of destruction by megadeth are also quite good

So what do you guys think the best metal riffs are?

the bass intro riff for Peace Sells. I love the pick tone Dave Ellefson gets on that.

I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I like "Sad But True", "Cult of Personality", and "Dr. Feelgood".

I'm a die hard Iron Maiden / Steve Harris fan normally but that Peace Sells riff just kills.

Travel in Stygian - Iced Earth
    Desert Rain - Iced Earth
    The Hunter - Iced Earth
    Burnt Offerings - Iced Earth
    Melancholy - Iced Earth
    The Words Unspoken - Andromeda
Walk in the Shadows - Queensryche
    Insect - Spiral Architect
Gathering of Desolates - Mog Ruith
    Harmageddon - Apocalyptica :bag:

That's the short list for now. There's a ton of songs with great metal riffs that aren't "mallcore" bands.

  12. Gosh I guess its up to me to teach you guys about real metal? How about Dave's bass on Neurosis "Obsequeos(sp) Obsolesence" from "Word as Law". Or pretty much every song off "Pain of Mind" by the same guys.
Or almost every song off "Israel" by Sleep. Or "Fireface" by High on Fire. Or again pretty much any song by Old Grandad. Or, heck most of the best metal bands you cant even hear the bass. Slayer? Ok on Undisputed Attitude you can hear it but South of Heaven?
Or that one song by Emperor whose name eludes me.

You won't get flames by me, those are all great riffs.

    There are many, many others.

  15. yes, that is a great metal riff imo
plus i am pretty keen to a few RATM metal riffs, like testify, Calm as a bomb, wake up, freedom, born of a broken man, bulls on parade, revolver...

I like those a lot, i don't know if RATM qualifies as metal, but some people do, some don't, if you don't, disregard that list :)

I'm going to cheat and go into the catagory of Stoner Rock who's goal it is to create heavy groovin' riffs. (Slow metal)

Black Sabbath - A National Acrobat
High on Fire - 10,000 years
    Sleep - Dragonaut
    Sleep - Dopesmoker
    Clutch - Spacegrass
    Clutch - Mice and Gods
    Big Business - Focus Pocus
    Candlemass - Solitude
Eyehategod - Every song off "Southern Confederacy of Ruined Lives"
Kyuss - Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop
Kyuss - Son of a Bitch
    Kyuss - a lot of Kyuss ;)
    Pentagram - Bloodlust
Saint Vitus - I bleed black
Om - on the mountain at dawn
    Witchfinder General - Free Country
Black Sabbath - Into the void

I could go on forever in this aspect of metal, it's argued that it's all metal, but it's hard rock at least. Compared to Judas priest, it's brutal. To spit out the most obvious Thrash Riff

Slayer - Reign in Blood :bassist:

    Dun Dun Dun
Dah nah now dah nah now dah nah now

You know what I'm talkin' about. :D

  17. I actually prefer Angel Of Death... The cool riff, not the main trem picked one. About a mintue and a half in.

I don't think I can choose one though so here's a few others...
Pantera- Mouth For War, Cowboys From Hell both have awesome riffs.
    Mayhem- Pagan Fears.
    Black Sabbath- Paranoid.

  18. I Am The Black Wizards? If so, good choice...

Um... why haven't "Smoke on the Water" or "Iron Man" been mentioned yet? "Kashmir?" Even though I love a lot of modern bands, no one has anything that sticks in your head quite like these classics. Hypnotic!
