    First off, welcome to TB.
Secondly, to answer your question, most people here will probably tell you that it just depends on what you like. I've played my P bass and my Jazz in previous ska-type bands, but I've been using my 8-string with single coils and my 5er with a humbucker lately. It all depends on what you like.
    Bosstones: Jazz
    Reel Big Fish: Stingray
    Less Than Jake: Stingray
    Goldfinger: P-Bass
It all depends on what sound you're looking for. Make yourself happy first.
