Best Pickup for that "High-Fi/Modern" Tone ...

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by IotaNet, Mar 28, 2009.

  1. I ran across a clip that I absolutely love the tone in:

This is a Cirrus that also approximates the "Smith" tone. I can't afford a new bass right now but I do have one that could use some new pickups.

What pickups can I buy in a standard "P5" shape that will help me approximate this tone? My bass has a Lakland LH3 preamp which is pretty versatile so I'm sure I'm good there.

The question is, Which pickups?? (Nordstrand? Bartolini? EMG?)

    Opinions wanted!

Those 3 names are probably all you will need.
I personally think Barts could nail a Smith tone if eq'd right.
EMG's will probably sound the 'fastest' of the bunch.
Nordstrands are impressive. Good luck with your decision.

    Bears or Vikings?
  3. LOL - Are you nuts?

    Don't overlook Delanos either:

    Delano five-string soapbars

Don't know if these particular models are quite the size you need, but they sure look sweet to me. Betcha a set of these would do you right...

  5. Pay particular attention to the positioning of the pickups!
This very thing is mainly what makes the character and sonic signatures of a Jazz, Musicman, and Smith sound like they do.
