OK so I've been GASing over a Bag End cab for a while now and I finally have some money saved up for one. I really liked the idea of getting a S15L-D, the in between size, although I'm not sure how this would work as a stand-alone cab. I must have read through at least 10 different bag end threads on here but I still can't make up my mind...

I'm also not too sure about the cabs with the tweeter, I feel on a stand-alone I might not want it, but if it was going to be paired with another cab without a tweeter, then I might consider it. I've also had the idea of maybe a s15l/s12 combo, neither with tweeters. I just don't want it to be too bright, but don't want a complete lack of highs either. I definitely would consider getting a 2nd bag end later on if the situation calls for it, the question is, which would be best to get first as a stand alone?

Have you heard a BE? I owned a s15d for awhile and tried real hard to like it, but alas it was not to be. Something about the highs just threw me off. My bandleader always commented (ie complained) that is sounded boomy, which I always thought was a weird comment for that cab. I know what he meant though... just not a standard sounding cab. As for portability and volume ability you can't beat it.

I am using an Epi UL115 and think its the best 15 I've heard. At 43LBS its actually lighter than the S15d which is spec'd at 44LBS but mine weighed 51LBS. The UL115 is alot bigger, but in terms of tone their in no comparison IMHO. Lot more expensive though.

I think you're on the right track with the S-15L. I've used the S-15 alone and in combo w/ other cabs and wished I had just a bit more bottom. That is precisely what the extra cabinet size of the S-15L will get you. This could be paired up with the S-12 or an S-15X later. Their co ax tweet is a good one, but there is no way to attenuate it. If you are tweeter averse it may be too much.
If you are concerned that 1 cab won't be loud enough, just pump more power- these drivers can take it!

can't say I've heard a bag end in person (they don't seem as common out here on the east coast, I think they're made out west?) but everything I've read about them makes me think it's the kind of old school sound I'm looking for...I think the epi's are probably a few hundred dollars out of my price range, I don't really want to spend more than $600 (maybe $700 if it was REALLY worth it...and not to mention shipping.) Anything more and I'd probably start GASing over Bergantinos....I don't even wanna go there...that'd get expensive pretty quickly.

Hmmm, so I guess an S15L later paired with an S15X or S12 is probably not too bad of a deal, I know there's also an S15LX as well although if i was going to later buy a 2nd cab for filling in highs then it may be unnecessary. I'm not super-opposed to the tweeter, I've never actually had a cab with no tweeter, I'm just used to turning it down some...and it seems the bag end's can sound good without one. I play with labella 760fl flatwounds if that helps make things easier...

    heh uh oh...i just noticed a bergantino ht115 in F/S area....hmm!!

OK, further update...I got the bergantino. I just couldn't resist...its got the lower response similar to an s15l and an attenuator for the tweeter, should be just what I need!

    best stand-alone Bag End 15?

the s15l-d, it really is amazing. all the everything (l/m/h) i need in a single 15, with really surprising clarity when you want it to be so. simply the best, although i have'nt tried a widebody fitzmaurice omni top 15 yet. like all new cabs the bag requires a break in period for the speaker to settle in. but it sounded great right out of the box and now, at about the 200 hour mark, it is simply fabulous.

i used a double s-15 stack for the first time last night (and in a horrible sounding room too boot) and Now i see all what the fuss is about, wow. so now i'm torn between getting a pair of those for all but the smallest of rooms or simply adding a 2nd s15l-d for really big rooms, which would be heart stoppingly good. the single sl-d is all i need for most club gigs, with an under 100watt tube amp. in fact a fender/upright player just last night bent my ear for a half hour about this rig (it was the house rig for a multi-band gig we were on) saying it was greatest tone he's ever gotten. man he was all over that thing like white on rice. and if i ever get that ashdown abm 500 V2 i've been lusting after it would be all the cab i ever need for Any room. i ran a mesa diesel 1-15 (ev 606 design) retrofitted with an ev 15B for years and i like this cab a lot better, for comparison's sake.
