Best strings for honky tonk/Texas swing???

    I do a mixture of rockabilly slap and mostly gravitate towards gut or synthetic gut strings because I love that sound. When I play any kind of honky tonk shuffle/texas swing type stuff, notes don't seem very defined. What is a good compromise between the two styles of music? I'm torn on moving towards any kind of metal core strings because I have had them sound sorta boingy in the past when slapping. Maybe there is something out there that will work better for what I want?

    What strings, pickup, preamp/amp, and speaker are you are you using?
    I play western swing and jazz gigs with guts and can usually get plenty of definition with plain G&D and wrapped E&A.
    Some rooms are really tough though, even with steel strings.
