Your theory is very much correct - D'addario ProSteels are immensely piano-like, with harmonics that practically jump out of your bass and a very complex mid-to-high end... but not overly bright. Of course that's relative - someone whose a 10-year-old flats play will indeed find them "overly bright"... I'm talking about your average roundwould player in my guesstimation. The fact that they last quite long for stainless steels is the icing on the cherry of mixed metaphors. Try a set of ProSteels. I very much doubt you'll be disappointed.
