    Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been asked a billion times, but quick search showed nothing (perhaps I'm a search moron?)

At my jam space the rig I use is a early 70s SVT into a reissue 8x10, and it is exactly the tone I am after.

What is the closest I can get to this tone today?
This is a hypothetical, as I am not out to buy a new amp right now, so price isn't really a big deal but if there are any amps on the more affordable side, I'd love to hear them!

    Thanks

A bunch of people will recommend the VT Pedal.

  3. Or the SVT-VR into a Bergantino NV610..... (& a VTBASS pedal) :)

I'll have to try to track down a VR and play one. They are pretty close in sound?

@eyeballkid - The rig is always there for me to use, and I actually have a pretty sweet deal with the owner. He really likes me and I can take it out to shows when ever I want.
But I'm going to want my own dream rig eventually, if not just to take the nervousness off every time I take it from the show.

I've heard that the VR is very close to the original in sound.

VR into a Berg 610 is considered the closest to the old stuff. But the VT pedal is a very realistic and acceptable substitute these days for those on a budget.

Even more than a VR into an Ampeg 810 (CL or AV)? could you explain why?

  10. thats the move.

I believe because Ampeg uses different speakers in their cabs than they did in the old days.

Correct. The new speakers go too low and don't go high enough.

I see... does Bergantino sell just the speakers? or what kind of speakers sound like the old ampegs? sorry for the hijack :bag:

Berg doesn't sell speakers that I know of. I haven't tried either of these, but Webervst.com sells recreations of the original CTS speakers for $100 ea., and Jensen sells a 32 ohm version of their Mod speaker that's pretty cheap but I've heard it sounds really good. Neither of them are very high power (they'll combine for about 400w of power handling, which is about what the old ones did), but they're more toneful. Eminence has a couple speakers that would probably work, but they don't come in 32 ohms.

  16. you can get 32 ohm eminence speakers from fliptops.net. they say that they are their recommendation for upgrading svt cabs, but that they are the same ones that come in modern 8x10s, which is confusing. i thought the modern 8x10 speakers were not so good. but due to the vintage nature of fliptops.net, i would assume that these are more vintage flavored.

but i don't know for sure...

Ya, usually Bruce is pretty right on, but no way I'd use those Eminences that Fliptops sells. I think I'd go with Jensen Mods. From what people have told me, I think they're good enough to where I would take a chance on them.

Also works for us old guys who no longer have the desire or the back to lug around an 8x10!

VT pedal for of us that can afford a SVT-VR/CL but don't wish to lug a 90 lb monster all over the place anymore.
