I'm starting to look for a used USA Fender P Bass. Are there some years to avoid? How are the newer ones compared to early, mid, and late nineties?

There are great basses in all their years, and a fair number of dogs in many of them as well. The ones they're making now are very nice. No such thing as a year to avoid. If anyone posts "year X sucks" someone else will post "my X bass is awesomesauce."

As a rule 2008.2009 and 2010 are the "best" in the last 20 years or so

Very true, people do that. I wouldn't say I'd "avoid" mid-late 70's Fenders, but I'd be much more leery about buying basses of that vintage sight unseen. On the other hand I'd buy any US Fender made during the last 5 years, unseen, without apprehension.

No way, bro. 2012 was the best, closely followed by 2010, then 2011 kinda trailed behind 2009. 2013s are about the same as 2008s. This was the year JC took over QC. There was some transition, but he got it right after the first two Teles came off the line.

The 2010 MIA and 2013 MIM I have are both well constructed and sounds great as is. Check for clearance pricing on new ones this time of year as well as the used.

    My 2011 is a well built/sounding beast.

There's usually only a year-end clearance on MI if the new model year has updated features. Because otherwise, they're the same thing with a different serial number.

We all know there were at least two people in the chorus singing "pussy cow".

I agree Fender got it right again in 2008.
But everything from 2008-2013, is top notch.
Fender is on a roll again.
Maybe in 30 years form now they will be talking about the
    2008-2018 Fenders ?

    I liked the '63 P best.

  17. 2008 and newer seems to be the way to go. There are good ones from every year but they became more consistent in 08.

I have a 2010 Japanese Jag and 2011 American Deluxe Jazz. Either of these kick the living bejeebus out of any of the many Fenders I played in the 70's.

Can't speculate too widely, but I have a USA P from 2010 and its the best bass I've ever played.
