I'm interested in building a smallish subwoofer using my two BP102's. I've looked at Bill Fitzmaurice's site and I'm not sure which would maximize my BP102's to their best advantage as a pure subwoofer. Which is the better option, the Jack 210 or the Omni 12 using two BP102's? I want it only as a sub in my bi-amp rig. Has anyone here built one? I'll be checking out Bill's forums, but I thought I'd ask for some input from my fellow TB'ers.
There is an option of building the Omni 12 / Omni 12 Tallboy as a subwoofer using two BP102's. Several folks on Bill's form have done that. It's an option in the latest plans. The Jack 210 won't work as a subwoofer. Another option is a T39 with a single BP102, or a wider version with two BP102s. But that is a more complex build. However it will give you the best performance. I would lean towards the O12TB sub as it supposedly gives pretty good performance and is a relatively easy build.
The Omni12 with two BP102 is what you are looking for. It is not a true subwoofer, but a full range cab when used with the midhorn and tweeters. You can build the O12/BP102 pair as speakers-only. The design is good for up to 500 Hz, but the BP102 is more limited. 250 Hz is where the response dips. Jack is a full range cab, and BP102 is not a recommended driver.
Thanks. Yeah, I thought the O12 would be the better option. Currently my BP102's are in another 210 cab and it has helped my low end a bit, but I though BFM's design might get more out of those speakers. I don't really need the mid-range for it though.
I built an Omni 12 210 last fall (?) using a pair of BP102's and we use it as a sub for our band PA. We love it. Placement is definitely important but it really fills out our sound nicely. We played an outdoor block party a week ago and my guitar player commented how balanced it all sounded when listening to ipod music during our break. And my drummer absolutely loves it! It gives a nice THUMP that we can hear and feel when playing in the little dives around here. I'd love to hear a T39 (or 2!) but for small to medium bars and volume levels it really seems to shine. bgavin is one of the experts on the BFM cabs around here, as well as Bill himself. If you get over to the BFM forum talk to Tim A. He came up with the idea of this as a sub and he built the first one. There's a pretty good chance that I built the 2nd. I notice that you're in Wausau. I'm near Madison. If you can get down here sometime you could stop by and check it out. PM me if you think it'll work. Here's a pic from the block party. You can see the sub behind the guitar player, firing into the brick wall of the garage.
Here's a good thread about the cab over on the BFM forum. Part of my build and pix are on toward the end.
Very cool. It looks to be about the size I can work with. Not sure if I'll be around Madison any time soon, but I appreciate the offer and I'll keep it in mind. Thanks. Have you used it as part of your own rig? That's what I'm intending it for. We already have two JBL SRX728's in our PA, driven by two 4000 watt QSC power amps. I'm looking to use the O12/BP102 pair to fill out the bottom onstage for mainly larger outdoor shows, and a few larger indoor ones.
I only played bass through it a couple times back when I first built it and as I recall it sounded good. Our primary use was for a small PA sub. It works well in that role so I'm sure it'd also do well as a bass rig. Register and ask the pros over on the BFM forum for more info. They know this stuff inside and out. And I wouldn't be surprised if Bill checks in on this one sometime soon. He's pretty regular around here and he'll definitely give you the straight dope.
Thanks for the link to that thread. I've been checking the BFM forum, but didn't come across that one. It seems to be just what I'm looking for.
I started typing a decently long response then I realized that this wasn't the Omni Top we're talking about. The Omni12 should give you what you're looking for. BF designs are amazing. I've done some fiddling around with an Omni Top 12 (2512 loaded) and Titan 48 (3015LF). The sound was huge to say the least. The sound will be hifi and clean to the max.
