Somebody decided to Explorerize this unbroken neck Bicentennial Thunderbird. It ended up on Ebay and I was the lucky bidder.

Here it is on arrival, 7 lbs. of Honduras Mahogany and assorted parts.

Appears to have been painted with a broom...

Man I'm not the type to care what other people do to their own belongings, but you gotta think this "work" was done by some guy who lights the fireplace with $100 bills while the A/C is cranked and all the windows are open, right?

Subbed, can't wait to see the fix!

Subscribed - I love these type of restoration projects.

I've got to admit that back in the 60s I reshaped a Japanese P bass clone body to an SG shape, got quite a good finish on it (with a brush). I would never have done it to a 'proper guitar'.

It confused the hell out of everyone who thought they knew about guitars, I told them it was a P neck on an EB-0 body. Some of them actually believed me!

I did this to my '60 EBO around '73 with a chisel and a preval sprayer. Would be worth a lot more today if I hadn't! But it made the bass much more useable than with a single mudbucker.

I gave it a freshening up a few years ago but didn't refin it.

Why do people feel the need to mod nice instruments like that? Be sane like the rest of us and start with something cheap...

The whole point of modding IMO at least is to improve instruments so why the hell start with something nice/ expensive?

Whoever started the damage probably did it in about 1984 when it was just an old bass as far as anybody was concerned. It's easy to forget that a 1976 Fender was considered absolute garbage at about that time, too.

    There was one improvement!
The 3 point bridge swapped out for the bbot haha!

Urgh the pu cavities. Surely they could of done a better job there.
They should of angled the pickup that would of truly completed the "look" haha!

Thanks. Yeah, I put Schaller M4s on it in 1966, got the bright idea to replace them with Hipshots 3 years ago. Big mistake. Live and learn.
