Black Logo MIM Jazz?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by mattmanbass, Dec 9, 2014.

  1. I recently scored this fender Jazz, it has a black logo rather than silver, ive read that this may be a squire? Anyone know anything about it? It has a badass II bridge and it appears as if the pickups have been replaced, so for the money I think I did ok, but that would be a downer if its actually a squire.

Fender Squier Series, not technically a Squier. I used to have a P that had a killer neck on it.

  5. The pickups are a cream color, you cant see it very good in the pictures, Do you guys believe these were replacements? Or are they original?

There is no certain way to know unless they look drastically different. The only consistency I have noticed with Fender Standard pickups is black and white wire, hardly a defining feature. They may just be new covers. It should have came with black plastic strat knobs as well, the ones on yours look much better.

i'm thinking Fender Traditional Series which is from the same era as the Squier Series. They used the same necks and bodies as all the other MIM basses at the time. Although, even if it did say Squier Series on it, it would still be an MIM Fender, not a Squier.

  8. If it was a Squier..would it not have the word "Squier" or "Squier Series" on the head stock up by the G string tuning peg??

  9. That's what I thought, but I have read some seriously conflicting information on this bass, some people claim its made with American made parts, others claim its nothing more than a squire, so its hard to know what info to trust, I personally believe its a Mexican fender just like all the others, nothing special but nothing less either lol

it looks like the bass does have the correct pickguard for the Traditional or Squier series . But like my Squier Series P bass, the previous owner did some upgrades.

Black logo does not always mean Squire. I have a '96 MIM Strat that I bought new with the black logo. It is not a Squire in any way shape or form. I've seen other non-Squires with the black logo. Granted, many are Squire, but not all.

... search 'Black Label Fenders' ... there is so much written about these it is no longer a mystery ... unfortunately, there is nearly as much incorrect as accurate, so you may need to weed through a bit ...

  15. Did the Squier series come with a 1 piece guard? I thought that was just the standard MIMs.

Oooh, good catch. I did not even notice that. Mine was a P so I do not know for certain. I have never seen a Fender Standard in black label, aside from the ones that people have remove the "Squier Series" logo from. Although, that does not mean they do not exist.

I looked into this a few years ago on a Strat a friend picked up. Don't really remember what the conclusion was except that the Black Logo Mexican Fenders from the 90's confuse the hell out of everyone.

    They are not, however, Squiers.

'Black Labels' came with the one piece pickguard, the MIM 'Standards' from the period used the conventional pickguard/control plate configuration (with black Strat knobs) ...

  19. My 96 standard came with white strat knobs.
