Hello all. Today my Blackstar U700 head began making a great deal of white noise. This happens only when a cord is in the input and the noise is affected by eq and setting changes. I have tried different cords, ac outlets, and cabinets and the issue remains. This happens with or without a bass plugged in. Has anyone had a similar issue or can anyone give me any suggestions what the issue may be. Luckily it is under warranty, but if this is a common thing I may consider a different head. Thanks
My drummer changed to those new lights bulbs and we had noise. He swapped back in the old ones and noise was gone.
Is this with a bass connected to the other end of the cable, or when the cable is unterminated? If it’s with a bass, is it active? Have you changed the battery? If it’s without a bass, just the cable, this could be entirely normal. The termination can have a lot of impact on what’s called “equivalent input noise”.
Hi, thanks. It isn’t an interference issue, the amp is making a noise like a tv on a channel with no station, thanks though
Thank you no. it’s not a battery issue. It is beyond the sound of a cord not connected to instrument. Pure white noise. Thank you though for trying to help
Hi folks, thanks for your replies. It has been determined as not a normal thing and I am awaiting warranty reply. I apologize if I have not directly replied to your responses. I don’t often use these forums so may not have replied properly. Cheers , thanks
Try a simple test before returning it. If it is near a cell phone, router, LED power supply, computer, or anything similar, try the amp away from these devices and on another circuit breaker.
The question I asked is if the noise changes or goes away when the plug is removed from the amp itself? When the plug is inserted, it changes the input termination of the amp's circuitry and some amps can become much noisier. There are circuits that can filter RF interference from the input, different designers do this sort of thing in different ways (or not at all), but what I am describing is how the input terminations can greatly impact the noise floor.
Agedhorse. Thanks again. I understood your question or suggestion but perhaps did not give a clear answer. This happens only when a cord is plugged into the amp input. I had said this in the OG post but was perhaps unclear. Anyways I brought it to the store and all agreed that an amp should not make such a noise. I am a bit underwhelmed by the amp as this happened in less than a year under fairly light use. I was also told that the 1 other of this model came back for the same reason. The store offered me a replacement with no eta or the option to upgrade for a small fee to a different amp. I am up in the air between an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 or an AG 700. Anyways thanks for the input, cheers
This suggests that the input termination is a major factor in the noise floor. If the termination was say 22k such as the broad band source impedance of a typical pickup, you might find that AT THE SAME OVERALL gain is in fact comparable to other amps. How does it sound with a passive bass? Noise from unterminated inputs is a complete non-issue IF it goes away with a real world termination.
It sounds like white noise similar to a tv on a non active station. Like I said it is an amp issue determine all involved to be unfiixable, or not worth fixing. Thanks again
Ok, sorry I wasted my time. Just curious, if you already knew the answer to your questions then why did you bother asking them in the first place?
I think we may have a simply fixed misunderstanding in our communications. If you we’re trying to educate me on what could cause this issue on a functional amp, I appreciate that you shared your knowledge. I will also use your terminology in the future. I was seeking an answer to see if this was a problem people have had with this amp model and if it was fixed what the issue was. If any miscommunication transpired I apologize if it has not been clarified. Thanks again for the info and I will refer to it when required. No offence intended there Brotherman and I hope you have a good weekend
