can you make a passive J bass with a single volume, blend & tone pot? Would there be some kind of sonic trade off to do this instead of the VVT setup?

Actually prefer Volume Blend tone myself. One of my last jazz basses had that and it was so much easier to use. Instead of having to fiddle with both volume knobs to get the right balance whenever you have to adjust or turn the volume up or down between songs, you can keep the blend and tone consistent and just adjust that one knob, the volume.

A few threads about the control schemes here on TB, here's one.
    Volume-Volume-Tone OR Volume-Blend-tone

I don't know. My passive fender jazz basses are VVT and they sound very nice.

Considering this for my Jazz as well. Nothing against the VVT setup, but I much prefer a blend knob.
Will be reading through the thread @Maxdusty posted and keeping an eye on this one to see what's mentioned.

My Fender Urge in my user pic is wired VVT (got it that way already modified with the EMG pickups), it sounds great the way it's wired right now so leaving it as is.
A bass I owned previously, a Fender Squier series Jazz bass was wired Vol/Blend/Tone when I repaired it and installed a pre-built wiring harness, it also sounded great but found that I had a much easier time controlling it compared to the other jazz bass wired VVT which I found a little more involved in getting the blend just right. I really don't know if there's an overall performance advantage of one over the other, at least I did not notice it when I had the two jazz basses side by side, perhaps just a matter of personal preference and what you're used to.

I rewired my current jazz to VBT after years of playing VVT. I prefer VBT since all my other 2 pickup basses have blend knobs. There are no sonic drawbacks I can discern.

While I was in there, I added a series-parallel switch. Jazz basses have never really been my thing but those two mods really changed that for me.

  7. I've been shopping pre-wired harnesses for my Jazz and the Blend set up you're talking about is a common one I've been coming across.

I prefer a blend knob but it’s not a big enough issue for me to do anything about it. I’ve never had a passive bass with a blend knob. Just curious as to why they’re no more prevalent.

Because that's not how Leo did it.
