blending overdrive/clean - dynamics issue

I found I could get a great sound blending a GUITAR overdrive or distortion with the clean sound of my bass, using a line selector...

but I noticed that, as distortion pedals have a lot of compression, the mix between the two sound changes with my touch... the harder I play, the more I hear the clean channel...

I would like to know if anyone had the same problem and how you did fix it...

I was thinking of a compressor in the clean channel, or maybe running another overdrive with closed tones and low gain in order to use the compression of the pedal but still keeping the low end... I tried this way and it sounded good... maybe even better than mixing the clean sound, because I can't hear two distinct tones together if I use a bit of overdrive in the clean channel....

    any suggestions?
