I have seen some postings that have been personal recently in more than one forum.
IMO, the most valuable way to spend my precious time is to practice. The second most valuable way is to read the posting of the "blowhards" on here who have way more experience and knowlege than I. I'm starting the DB at 52, and really don't have time to waste on hurt feelings.
We all have one thing in common, and it is so much fun that it should never be a cause for personal attack.
    There, I said my piece.

Blowhard: bragger: a very boastful and talkative person.
Opinionated is not in that definition. ;)

And Ken Smith is certainly opinionated, but who isn't? :D

Opinions are valuable, usually based on some knowledge, experience or reason. disagreement is good, it usually brings out more information. :hyper: personal attacks are bad, makes people mad and go away. :crying:

See Chris, this is what I'm bitching about. Punks and Trolls not respecting the folks I've not had access to before TB are now running them off. I can't imagine speaking to any of these heavy cats in the way that is even remotely disrespectful. Even if I disagree with them.

Lately there have been lots of bozos that are just stopping by for a quickie. They read something they don't like, pick a fight and then they are off to upset some other applecart. Meanwhile important rich voices of varied experience and depth of perspective go off somewhere else. And they probably should. I wouldn't put up with it either. I guess I should just be grateful I had a chance to chat with them at all. It is a great gift of their time they gave. And they did it without compensation.

    Generosity rewarded with animosity. Nice.

That's why there is no more Ampeg site, first the helpful people stopped posting then pretty soon it was full of petty personal attacks and then Tommy just shut it down.
I hope this one doesn't go downhill.

Well then please send me a line next time you find one, and I'll see what I can do. Things should lighten up a bit in a week anyway.

Problem is, by the time the masked-trolls strike it's a little too late. Hit and run.

But I dunno.... I love the heavy cats just like you all do, but I think some of the "opinionated" folk are a little too quick to pull rank. Lately IMO it's been a turn-off and I think really discourages the discourse as Toad mentioned earlier. Sure, they've paid the dues to be able to have those opinions but it really shuts people out sometimes. Now I understand the wisdom in Paul's site-wide rules for conduct. If you can't say something nice, even if you are right, maybe you should withhold comment until you can say it with respect. I think Sam-I-Shot-The-Sherry epitomizes this quite well.

I'll be very depressed if Warmbottocks leaves or stops being a regular. Someone needs to go coax him with drinks, dinner, and bass-porn. :) Biggus better not leave either dammit! :(

This strikes me as very strange post... what is the point being made?

So it is complaining about personal attacks - but I would see the use of the term "Blowhard" as a derogatory term and the kind of thing which provokes bad feeling.

So people who have wisdom and experience being called blowhards or elitists is exactly the kind of thing which I would see as personal attacks...?

    :meh:

+1 Poptime, you've got me confused.

Perhaps so but many of the heavy cats became heavy because of the character traits that can be seen in their writing. Confidence or arrogance, persistence or being picky, pick your character trait, each has its positive and negative aspects. Spend any time with a "heavy cat" and you'll see both sides in stark relief. It's what makes them compelling. It's what made them at the top of their game. It's what makes them annoying.

In my life I try to give them extra rope because of the dues paid and the results of their accomplishment. I try to allow extra latitude for artists and craftspeople to be flaky, weird, and generally colorful characters. If we ask them to behave counter to their muse we may loose the color that they provide. I'm not always successful at that btw.

The trolls and quick hit angry folks are like that throughout their lives. They miss the richness that the "heavy cats" could bring to their experience. When they lash out it's their loss, it just pisses me off when they ruin it for me too.

And I've seen it before, too. Which is why I said "The second most valuable way is to read the posting of the "blowhards" on here who have way more experience and knowlege than I"

Now that I read back my post it does look a little confusing. Sorry to muddy up things. Guess I didn't say it as well as I could have. :bag:

It is indeed confusing at times. I post a feeling or statement, and some of the "regulars" as I now am becomming familiar with immediadly challenge or pull apart. And where as I do not ever think this site will ever become like the preciously mentioned one....you can't have an opinion that disagrees with "regulars" here at all. You are ganged up on,personal attacks...well I don't think they are...but I have had users say I offend them with my "tone" of my posts.

I always learn from this site, but it takes some arguing to make a point or loose a point..and I feel if the main people disscussing things are ok with each other, THEN THE "SIDELINE POSTERS" SHOULD KEEP OUT OF IT IF THEY DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD.

Human beings, especially musicians have PASSION, and sometimes that gets heated.....that's human nature.

Why are we worrying about the opinion of punks and trolls? I suspect that if we don't give them any attention then most will disappear. It's not like they are in our personal space. They're just posting words which we can choose to ignore. The core community here has learned to get along with each other's idiosyncrasies just fine and newer like-minded individuals will see that. Yes, there have been some heated discussions here that have been legitimate but let choose our battles wisely.
