As many of you may know, Dean is imfamous for producing low quality musical instruments which they combine with intolerably shameless marketing to create what may be the most appalling company in the musical instrument manufacturing business.

Earlier this year, Dean attempted to pull their crap on this very board. They we warned by one of the mods to stop. Now they are doing it again.

In retaliation for their latest scam, I would like to start an all TB boycott of Dean products.

    Can I get an amen?

(P.S. some alternatives to Dean basses are Schecters, Ibanezes, ESPs, etc. Feel free to PM me for alternatives to Dean.)

Does anybody even buy Dean basses to begin with? I know I don't know anyone who has.

Yes I agree. If you use a Dean bass, you will become undesirable to the opposite sex.

    :D ;)

I've already deleted that post, due to my quick realization they appear to be spamming TB.

I commend you on making a stand and exercising your right as a free market consumer... yet with this thinking ... all major production companys bass or not would have to be boycotted... As far as that goes Ibanez seems to be somewhat guilty of the same thing at times... Theres nice Deans out there just like there are nice Fenders.. QC is not great but thats to be expected of a 300-700ish bass IMO. Iv played Deans that sat just fine with me ..... iv played some that I have wanted to use as fire wood, but thats the way it is. Now on the other hand if there causing Talkbass trouble then each should be tied to a stump and beaten.

You must be referencing that thread started with a bunch of links to the Dean GUITARS on their web site. When I was in High School I put a deposit down on a Dean Mach V bass which had a very radical and unique design (in retrospect it looked kinda strange, but it was the 80's... I've only seen 2 of them since, I didn't buy it in the end becuase 4 months later it still hadn't shown up and in the 90's they started re-using the Mach V name on another shape...) but I checked out their web site and it looked like they've begun ripping off just about everyone. They even had a DEAD RINGER for a Warwick (which we all know is a dead ringer for several others...)

Well, no need for me to boycott since I never would have bought anything from them anyway, but I'm with you.

How about instead of an AMEN, we get as many of our TB members as we can to e-mail their webmaster several times EVERY DAY untill someone from the company logs on here and issues an oppology for the shameless violation of our rules.

I have compiled this list just as some suggestions to buy instead of Deans. All of these can be found at MF, except for the SX basses which can be found at www.rondomusic.net:

    Instead of Dean Acoustic Electrics:

Buy the Rogue AB-304 Acoustic-Electric Bass. This offers just as much as the Dean but for less money. The tonal quality between the Rogue and Dean will be the same. If your looking for a few more features, try the Ibanez AEB10E Acoustic-Electric Bass with Onboard Tuner.

Concerning the Dean Pace Electric Upright:

It's simply not the real deal. I don't mean the fact that it's an electric-upright bass and doesn't feel or sound like an actual double bass, it is hard for me (I play double bass as well) to play it because it does not feel like the real thing. The bridge is not elevated and there is no curvature in the strings, like the Yamaha electric-uprights for example.

    Instead of Dean Edge 09:

I recommend SX Basses. In this scenario, I am confident you will find the SX Basses will in fact be superior in sound quality to the Dean. For one, the pickup position covers more of the natural harmonic sweet spots of the bass. (www.rondomusic.com)

Instead of the rest of the Edge series, I recommend:

    Schecter Diamond Series
    Low-End Spectors
Yamaha RBX Series <------my personal favorites of this list.
Ibanez SRX Series <------ my second favorite.

    I hope this helps.

Remember, if you buy a Dean Bass, sexually desirable people of the opposite sex will ridicule your personal appearence. :p

It's likely Dean Guitars as a company are not spamming the board, but rather an ecstatic street team member or employee. I will not boycott any brand for their method of self-promotion, nor will I boycott them for the action of a fan or single employee.

Now for that, it seems you aren't a fan, don't try to bring the world with you as far as hating Dean. Would you have done the same if it was FBB, Fender or another company?

I believe that companies are responsible for the actions of their street teams. Dean is a professional manufacturing company; they use street teams for cheap spamming rather than paying for an appropriate outlet for advertising their product. Thus, we are spammed by overzealous individuals who may or may not be affiliated with the company. Had Dean properly informed their street teams and cautioned them against board spamming, we would not be having this discussion. My frusteration is not caused by their product, but by their disrespect for the entire TalkBass Community shown by their spamming.

I'm sorry, but I still don't see justifying a "boycott" based on one member's actions. If anything, this is the same concept, only in another direction. One person's personal goals will be met by means of a thread started on this forum.

Then so be it! Keep in mind, though I'd like to consider myself to be a pretty kool kat, my words will not exactly inspire the masses to revolt against Dean. They will look at what me and other members (including you) have said, and decide for themselves. I just wish to expose my frusterations with the company to a larger audience. What I say is my opinion, others have theirs' too.

However, buying a Dean Guitar will bring great shame to your family.

I don't think you need to tell any TB members to boycott deans. We all know they suck.

They are as good as any other Korean made bass. I rather like the Rhapsody.

  18. I really don't like people that do this. Not the street team thing, which can be cool, but from what it appears, this is just about making kids into salespeople. Do you get discounts if you join the street team? Or do you just get ****** shirts and stickers?

I was on a couple of band's street teams and it was fun, flyering, and promoting a group you loved. Then they'd put you on the guest list and you'd get free t-shirts and stickers and EPs or 7"s. These were smaller acts, but it was still really cool of them to do. You felt a part of a family, not a monolithic entity.
  19. That's not the signal their adds send off... :D :p

That street team thing is disgusting. It actually makes me sick (of course, I'm an anti-capitalist socialist... :smug: )
