hey. 16 years old, got a bass a little early this christmas. I played the guitar for around 6-8 months (acoustic) before I decided I wanted a bass. I have absolutely no knowledge in music theory or any of that ****.... but I'm trying! I'm reading through lessons and practicing quite a few hours. (well, my third day having it, but I'm really digging it.)
I was hoping that while I look through all the lessons and previous threads, you guys could help me out with any little bit of advice you might have.

How do I play a bass? I use my thumb, index, and middle finger. I remember watching bassist's play, and they dont use their thumbs, but it comes natural to me. Should I really consider changing this?

when playing, is it expected to be able to hold down more than one note? (like the guitar, where you press down on three strings to produce a C chord or something) I have learned pink floyds "money" song no problem and am working on the beatles' "day tripper", and have looked at some tabs...from what I gather I DONT need to hold down more than one string at a time, but..?

what exactly is major and minor? I read a lesson on it but I didnt really understand.

ok...so say my friend strums the chords C, G, A, D. I want to jam along with him...so I play the root notes... but there are 2-3 different C notes on the bass! how do I know which octave to use? does it matter?

Are there bass solos and **** like that I could learn? I am getting pink floyds wish you were here CD (drool for "shine on you crazy diamond" and "wish you were here")...I watched two guys with a bass and guitar play "wish you were here" and they rocked. the bass was kickassssss!
Can you guys suggest some of the better songs to learn and play for my bass? I am going to play solo quite a bit, so I want to be able to entertain myself.

I am having trouble with jimi hendrix's "fire". I just cant seem to make the same sounds.

I want to be able to create my own badass basslines, but I dont have any imagination or creativity or musical sense in my blood at all. all I have is love, man. what can I do to better myself?

I'll be back after I practice for a bit and read through some more ****. thanks for any help in advance! Im really digging it man!

  2. Hi, welcome to Talkbass Taoist, glad to see you came over from the "dark side" ;)

The "problem" with your questions is that they probably all have been discussed several times before, you should do some searches.
(I'm not being critical towards your questions, it's just pointless discussing the same things over and over)

Anyway, these should help you :

No problem. I probably should've explained it. However, as a Taoist myself, I must admit that your reaction was extremely un-Taoist. Is it just a name, and nothing else?

uh. I study taoism and practice its philosophical principles...but I'm young and weak minded and am not good at it...

...Thats just an excuse, but an excuse is all I need ;)
