Okay- subject changed. How are the Brice 6-strings?

Okay TB'ers, here's the deal. I have a show coming up for a local festival, and I play reggae with 4 other guys. I need a good 5-string bass, as my other 5-string bass (MM Stringray '08) got stolen. I got $400 back, but that's all I have now to buy a new bass.

So, basically, I have two weeks.

Please suggest me a 5 or 6-string bass that'll get the job done: good low tones, and has a great reputation.

New or used (if used, link me!).

  2. OLP fiver. Brice sixer if you don't mind the weight or the chunky chunky neck. I've heard good things about all the SX basses -- don't know if they have 5 & 6, though. Also, any of the Squier fivers.

I'm actually more on the side for a sixer.

How are the Brice's? I see they're at $300, which is insanely cheap. Any videos of people playing them?

I'm not so fond of that Cort; the design and shape; plus it's not even wood.

I play a Douglass 6er and it has a nice sound, the pickups and electronics do not sound bad at all. www.rondomusic.com (they sell the birce stuff as well and I assume they are made by the same company)

Here are some improvised recordings of it:

I use it on trip swells, working the room, insane drummer, letting out my anxieties, brass tacks, and no wonder.

I got my Peavey Grind 6 for less than 300 euros second hand. You can get a new one for around 375 euros... which works out a little over 500 dollars. But that's just in translation, I don't know what price they sell for in America.
    Look it up :D
It's a great instrument for the money. (there have been many threads agreeing with this)

If you want to go down the 6 string route I'd probably get one of these if I were you:

I think all of these are better options than a Brice. But that's just my opinion.

If I were to get a 6er I'd go for the Yamaha (unless bidding goes above your budget and then Ibanez would've been my choice).

If you've changed your mind and now looking for a fiver as well I think any of the ones posted is a GREAT choice and they all feel and sound more than $400.

P.S You might want to look into a Peavey Grind 6er, I heard good things about them but never got to try one.

i had a Brice and was not overwhelmed. If I bought a used 6 then a Peavey Grind would be high on the list.

Well, I bid on this, good choice? Should I buy a new preamp for it before I get this bass?

You're going from a fretted 5 to a fretless 6 with an important show coming up. That's pretty brave :D

I'm going to say something that you probably already/ don't want to do:

Try before you buy. If you just really can't wait and do happen to win the Brice, I say play it, set it up, play it again, then decide whether or not you want to do things like upgrade electronics and things. No offense or anything, it's just who wants to do all of that work when you may just like it in the beginning?

  16. I had that SAME EXACT bass. I installed a Bartolini 4.6A/P preamp and it absolutely KILLED. Sounded very much like a Warwick with a distinctive growl. I sold it to a guy in Boston...only because I realized I'm not a 6-string kind of guy. 5-strings for me.
You should be pleased with that bass. Although it is 35" scale, it is VERY comfortable to play. Well balanced, too. I do surely miss that bass a lot!

Thanks for everybody's opinions. I hope I do win the Brice, but just to ease: I do have other basses for the show coming up, but I'd like a 5/6'er for it, as R&B and reggae just doesn't do it for me on a 4.

And I don't have access to any Brice's around here, that's why I posted this thread...

Oh, no, I understand that (if that was even directed toward me :D). I'm just saying even when you do get it, give it a whirl before swapping out parts. Again, you probably know that already, just trying to be a time saver.
