Hello, What is the deciding factor for choosing the correct size of the bridge with respect to breadth? I have noticed that my bridge when centered is slightly "inside" the bass bar and the bass response is noticeable improved when moved a little to the bass side. Should I choose a wider bridge? Please don't respond with "take it to a luthier", the nearest reliable is 8 hours drive from here. BTW, thanks to everybody for a great forum. regards Oystein Djupvik, Norway
Hello up there! The general rule is that the bridge width be about the same as the distance between the upper eyes of the f-holes. However, some makers install their bass bar too far out toward the f-hole, and a wider bridge is needed to cover the bass bar and provide good bass tone. You need to be careful how wide you make it, as a too-wide bridge can contribute to top sinkage around the f-holes, especially if the top is thin. Also, it's important that the bridge be centered between the f-holes, though a mm or 2 is not going to cause any problems.
